Data sources

Our careers data platform works hard to map numerous sources of reputable and high quality data from Office for National Statistics licensed under the Open Government Licence v.3.0, LMI for All, National Careers Service, O*NET, Graduate Outcomes, Adzuna, icould, HESA, Jisc and more.

In some instances, we are required to outline the licences under which we source this data:

O*NET

Pathways Explore includes information from the O*NET Career Exploration Tools by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (USDOL/ETA). Used under the O*NET Tools Developer License. Pathways has modified all or some of this information. USDOL/ETA has not approved, endorsed, or tested these modifications.

National Careers Service

Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Graduate Outcomes

Within our Pathways Graduate product we present salary and employer data and highlight relationships between university subjects and careers. This information is informed by the Graduate Outcomes (GO) survey which collects information from students 15 months after they finish their course.

The data we use in Pathways is from the 3 most recent Graduate Outcomes surveys.

Where we display an average salary, this is a median salary.

We follow HESA’s rounding rules when presenting this data. This includes:

  • All numbers are rounded to the nearest multiple of 5
  • Any number lower than 2.5 is rounded to 0 and therefore not used
  • Halves are always rounded upwards (e.g. 2.5 is rounded to 5)
  • Percentages based on fewer than 22.5 individuals are suppressed
  • Averages based on 7 or fewer individuals are suppressed
  • Percentages and financial data are not rounded

Where we display an average salary, we only do this when the data is informed by greater than 7 individuals.

Where we show a percentage breakdown of careers, we only do this when the total number of individuals in the target group is 22.5 or greater.

We have fallbacks in place in such instances where the number of individuals in a specific example don’t meet the above requirements.

Salary example

Where individual numbers for graduates of a specific subject, at a specific institution, for a specific career are 7 or fewer, we cannot show an average salary.

We therefore fall back to show an average salary from all graduates from that institution, irrespective of subject studied, for that specific career.

If the number of individuals is still 7 or fewer, we fall back to use national data to get an average salary for that subject and career combination.
